The Problem of Renting versus Buying
نویسندگان
چکیده
The problem studied here is a member of a large class of on-line decision problems. The basic question is to choose from two possible alternatives at a given instance, for the use of an item. This choice is based solely on previous experience. One alternative di ers the permanent acquisition of the item (rents it) and has a small recurring xed cost (rent) associated with its use. The other choice secures the item (buys it), but has a larger, though one time, cost (purchase price) associated with it. The item is used regularly. The choices have to be made to minimize the total cost of the item. As an example, we describe the car rental problem. We present deterministic and randomized algorithms against an unrestricted adversary and analyze them. We, also, de ne a -statistical adversary and present a deterministic algorithm against this adversary. All the algorithms presented are also shown to be optimal.

An NPV Analysis of Buying versus Renting for Prospective Australian First Home Buyers
This paper explores buying versus renting as an investment decision for a prospective Australian first home buyer, by comparing the NPVs of buying and renting. An ex-post analysis for overlapping 10-year periods from 1983 to 2013 for Australia’s eight capital cities suggests that renting was favourable for the decade from 1983 in most capital cities and buying was favourable from the early 1990...
متن کاملSki rental with two general options
We define and solve a simple extension of the ski-rental problem [4]. In the classical version, the algorithm needs to decide when to switch from renting to buying. In our version, no pure buy option is available: even after switching to the buy option, the algorithm needs to pay some reduced rent. We present an online algorithm for this problem with a matching lower bound.
متن کاملThe Valuation of Houses in an Uncertain World with Substantial Transaction Costs
This paper presents a dynamic model of residential real estate valuation that takes into account the uncertain time paths of rents and prices and the substantial transaction costs. By temporarily postponing decisions, buyers and sellers obtain additional information about future rents and prices and may avoid transactions that are costly to reverse. One implication is that the combination of su...
متن کاملExperiments with Software Renting
The Coase Conjecture (1972) has generated a large literature on the pricing of durable goods by monopolists. The theoretical predictions span a whole range with nearly perfect competition at one end and nearly perfect price discrimination at the other. An empirical test is therefore of importance. We test the Coase conjecture in an experimental setting and report on the results. We also test th...
متن کاملAn Architectural Pattern for Developing Renting Systems An Architectural Pattern for Developing Renting Systems
Despite the fact that renting is, to some extend, an application dependent activity, it is still possible to extract many fundamental common aspects that if captured in an appropriate conceptual level, a stable renting model can be developed and reused to build a wide range of renting systems. In this paper we propose an architectural pattern that model the renting problem. This pattern aims to...
